The Mission
The International Medical Graduates (IMG’s) that come to the United States to pursue residency are part of a very unique group. While they come from all parts of the globe with different languages, beliefs, and histories, they all share characteristics that help bind them together. Determination. Inner Strength. Faith. A love of medicine. Each made the difficult decision to leave their family, friends, and home country to pursue medicine in the US and accept the enormous challenges that come with it…and they do it not just for themselves, but for the very same family, friends, and country that they left behind. While they stand on the edge of a new life, they will always define themselves by the past that created the opportunity that lay before them, shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues from around the world.
Mission : Residency was conceived in hopes of combining the strength of one into an unstoppable force of many. While the IMG’s world grows exponentially as they meet countless new people in new places throughout the process, there is no avoiding one, inevitable & universal feeling : loneliness. Mission : Residency’s goal is to remind each of these IMG’s that they are NOT alone in their struggle.
The Mission is also determined to open doors to ALL hospitals for qualified international medical graduates. By showing a unified front & strength in numbers, together we cannot be ignored and can cause a shift in perception of the IMG.
The Band
It all starts with a seemingly, simple red band, inscribed with the words, “Mission : Residency” bordered on both sides with a white cross. Those that accept the challenge of Mission: Residency will receive this FREE band as a symbol of your participation in this free, non-profit initiative. The band is designed with a dual purpose in mind – to motivate the individual wearing it and to create a tangible bond that is easily recognized by other on the same Mission. All it takes is a quick look at someone else's wrist.
Why Red? A Letter to Our IMG's :
Dear Doctor,
The color red was chosen to remind you about your past, present, and future…and do it every time you look at the band on your wrist.
Red = Love. In this case, it refers to the love of medicine, as well as a reminder of the love that family & friends that gives you strength & never leaves you, no matter how far you are from home. A greater motivation, we can think of none.
Red = Power. The many obstacles presented to you on the road to residency can, at times, be intimidating. Some believe that it is the USMLE & Residency programs that control your future. The members of Mission : Residency do not accept that. The power belongs to you. You’ve earned it, through your years of schooling and unyielding determination, you’ve earned it. Every time someone tells you that you can’t do it or something gets in your way, we hope a quick look at your wrist will get you back on track.
Red = Blood. More specifically, it symbolizes the blood, sweat and tears that are shed during the long hours you have and will spend clawing your way to residency. Your sacrifice of blood now will be essential in securing the future of you & your family. They say that nothing worth having is without sacrifice. Is all of this worth it to you? Mission : Residency proclaims with great enthusiasm, "YES!"

Uniting through Mission : Residency
The Mission : Residency band is part of a bigger picture : Uniting IMG’s throughout the United States and around the world. It’s a lofty goal that we’re shooting for, but isn’t that the whole point? If each one of you is willing to aim high and go after your residency, we’re willing to follow your examples and do what it takes to make this mission a success. This is what how we plan to do it :
Local Chapters – Initially we’ll create 2 local chapters based on their relatively large population of IMGs : New York & Chicago. Each chapter will have a coordinator that will organize social meet-ups & activities allowing Mission: Residency members get to know one another, as well as begin networking for the future. Additional chapters can be created simply by emailing Mission : Residency that you’d like to do so.
On-line Community Support Forums : Allows Mission : Residency to accomplish the goals of local chapters, without the limits of geographical location. The, ‘home’ forum will live on www.theusmlezone.com , but we invite all the major forums to create satellite forums so that no matter where a Mission : Residency doc goes, they can feel at home.
Our Favorite Professors : Across the country there are physicians that, in addition to their medical practices, have answered the call to teach and pass on their knowledge. We will tell you that the best ones are not doing it for the money, but rather, for the love of teaching medicine. The passion they have - coupled with the credibility they have earned through their careers - make them ideal candidates to motivate IMG’s to keep going. We’re contacting nationally recognized USMLE professors to endorse, participate & support Mission : Residency by wearing the band. Stay tuned for a list of professors that are on your side...
